Solange von Bourges , also Solongia, Sollemnia, (* 862 in Villemont near Bourges , Cher ; † May 10 between 875 and 880 in Sainte-Solange (previously: Saint-Martin-du-Crot) near Bourges) is in the Catholic Church venerated as a martyr , virgin and saint . She is the patroness of the Berry region .

Legend

Solange was born in Villemont near Bourges and lived there as a shepherdess . She grew up in a devout family and vowed eternal virginity at the age of seven. She is said to have healed the sick and cast out demons by mere presence.

A nobleman, probably Bernhard von Gothien , met Solange with her sheep and was carried away by their beauty. He pressed her. When she didn't get involved with him and defended her virginity, the man kidnapped her. He forced her onto his horse and rode her home. On the way she struggled so much that both of them fell into the water when they crossed a river. The man drew his sword and cut off her head.

According to legend, the severed head is said to have called the name of Jesus three times. Solange's body picked up the head and carried it to Saint-Martin-du-Crot church. This part of the legend is similar to that of the legend of Dionysius of Paris .

The place and the church Saint-Martin-du-Crot were later named after her (Sainte-Solange). Solange is shown as a shepherdess, sometimes with a star above her head. There are also depictions of the beheaded with their heads in their hands.
