Solatopupa cianensis is a species of grain snails (Chondrinidae) from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora). The species is in a very small area in the Alpes-Maritimes (Southern France) endemic .

features

The spindle-shaped case is 8.9 to 11.3 mm high and 3.0 to 3.6 mm wide. It has 6¾ to 7¾ moderately strongly arched windings and a comparatively long, slim, conical upper housing end. It is light horn brown in color, but appears reddish because it is mostly covered with reddish dust. The skin is very thin compared to the other Solatopupa species. The case surface shows fairly regular, fine radial ribs. The mouth edge, which is only slightly bent, ends sharply, the white lip is hardly thickened. The reinforcement of the mouth is greatly or completely reduced (compared to the other Solatopupa species). Usually only one spindle lamella is formed. In addition, a weakly developed parietal lamella and an upper palatal and a lower palatal lamella can be added. The last turn is only hinted at, a little obliquely flattened and regularly rounded at the base. The navel is open, but can only be seen when viewed from above.

Similar species

The species differs from the other Solatopupa species by its light, horn-brown casing, which, however, usually appears reddish due to a dust coating, and by the relatively large casing with the greatly reduced muzzle reinforcement .

Geographical distribution and habitat

The area of this species is limited to a very small area in southern France in the Gorges du Cians and Gorges du Daluis . It occurs there exclusively on red Permian sandstones and quartz porphyries. The species is seen as an example of a relatively young speciation through adaptation (red sandstones and quartz porphyries) to a special habitat.

Taxonomy

The taxon was first described in 1910 by Eugène Caziot as Pupa cianensis . The type locality is in the Gorges du Cian, south of Beuil ( Alpes-Maritimes , France) on the right side of the river at approx. 1200 m above sea level. Edmund Gittenberger described five animals from the Gorges de Daluis (840 m above sea level).

Danger

The species is classified by the IUCN as "vulnerable" (endangered) due to its very small distribution area. The few find spots are also not in protected areas.
