Replica of Rödelheim Castle

The Solms Park is next to the Brentanopark one of two major parks in the Frankfurt district of Rödelheim . It is about five hectares .

location

The Solmspark is located on an island between the river Nidda and its branch Mühlgraben . In the northeast, the park is bounded by the road Auf der Insel, at its southwestern tip the Mühlgraben, which flows around the park to the east, flows back into the Nidda. The park was laid out in 1879 around the Rödelheim Castle of the Counts of Solms .

history

The history of the island on which the park is located goes back to the 12th century. A moated castle used to stand here, which passed into the possession of the Counts of Solms in 1463 . The castle was replaced by a classicist palace in 1864. A moat, the former course of which is still partially visible in the park, was filled in. Fruit trees had been cultivated on the site since 1800 and later a baroque pleasure garden was laid out. By 1879, the park was redesigned into a classic landscape park around Rödelheim Castle .

In 1935 the park became the property of the city of Frankfurt. The protection of nature and birds received a special focus, the Frankfurt ornithological station moved into the castle, which was destroyed in 1943 in bombing raids. The ruins were cleared in 1953 and the park was then redesigned around the existing old trees. It has been a listed building since 1986.

Today the park has extensive meadows in addition to its old trees. It is located on the cycle path network of the Frankfurt Green Belt . There is a playground for children. A special feature is the replicated floor plan of the castle , which was destroyed in the air raids on Frankfurt am Main in World War II . There are benches, a bronze model of the castle and a notice board. More information about the tree population (type and planting date) can be found online in the Frankfurt tree register .
