Solo Monk is a solo album by pianist Thelonious Monk . The recordings were made in Los Angeles on October 31 and November 2, 1964, in New York City on February 23 and March 2, 1965. They appeared in 1965 as a long-playing record on Columbia Records and on April 22, 1987 in the Jazz Immortals series as a compact disc at CBS / Sony. The album was reissued in 1998 in the edition Monk Alone: The Complete Columbia Solo Studio Recordings: 1962-1968 .

background

After Monk's solo piano numbers were included on all previous Columbia productions, the label decided at the end of October 1964 to release a purely piano album with Monk. The idea was, wrote Thomas Fitterling, to put Monk's reference "to the Stride tradition in the foreground."

The album contains both Monk originals as well as a number of cover versions of popular standards, such as " Dinah " (1924), " Everything Happens to Me " (1941) and " These Foolish Things (Remind Me of You) " (1936). Much of the material was recorded during Monk's stay on the American west coast in late October and early November 1964. During this time the live recordings Live at the It Club and Live at the The Jazz Workshop were made .

reception

Thom Jurek said in Allmusic , “ Solo Monk focuses on the mystery and haunted, angular beauty of the unadorned keyboard sides of Thelonious Monk .” The components of what made Monk such an uncompromising composer, arranger and especially a band member are in Jurek says that every note he plays can be clearly seen.

According to Thomas Fitterling, on the recording days in October and November 1964, the pianist was “not in the best mood to play; he listlessly gets rid of the pieces as if they were compulsory exercises. ”However, the title“ Monk's Point ”, a traditional blues riff theme, is worth emphasizing .
