Misterioso (Recorded on Tour) is an album by pianist Thelonious Monk . The recordings were made during live performances by his quartet between May 21, 1963 ("Evidence") and February 27, 1965 (" Well You Needn't "), supplemented by a studio recording of " Honeysuckle Rose " from March 2, 1965. The Recordings appeared in 1965 as long-playing records on Columbia Records and in the Jazz Originals series as compact discs on CBS / Sony.

background

The album contains both Monk originals as well as a number of cover versions of popular standards, such as " All the Things You Are " (1939), " Honeysuckle Rose " (1929) and " I'm Gettin 'Sentimental Over You " (1932). While "Misterioso", "Light Blue" and "Evidence" were accompanied by Butch Warren and Frankie Dunlop , the pianist played on the later tracks with Larry Gales and Ben Riley .

The Monk biographer Thomas Fitterling speculates that Columbia decided to publish this live material in 1965 because Thelonious Monk was only briefly in the studio twice that year and there was not enough studio material for a new Monk LP gsb. Fitterling also addresses the label's sloppy edition; the information on the cover was incorrect for four tracks and the studio recording of "Honeysuckle Rose" was subsequently applauded to be released as a live edition.

During this time the live recordings Live at the It Club and Live at The Jazz Workshop were made . The recording of "Misterioso" was from the Big Band and Quartet Concert at Lincoln Hall in 1963, which appeared on Big Band and Quartet In Concert (1964). "Evidence" also appeared on the album Monk in Tokyo , first released in 1969.

reception

According to Thomas Fitterling, one could assume that - similar to the compilation Always Know (1979), which mainly added studio tracks - Misterioso was also a “leftover”. “In fact, Misterioso is a compilation of live material of first choice.” Overall, however, it is “a very inconsistent record in terms of quality.” In “Well, You Needn't” the solos “seemed disparate and not particularly inspired”; “I'm Gettin 'Sentimental Over You” is “good club routine”. The version of "Honeysuckle Rose" is merely "a parodic pleasure"; In comparison, the recording of the same theme on The Unique (Riverside 1956) clearly proves to be the master version.
