Solomon Hirsch (born March 25, 1839 in Hohebach , Württemberg ; died December 15, 1902 in Portland , Oregon ), also Salomon Hirsch, was a German-American politician , businessman and ambassador of the United States to the Ottoman Empire .

Life

Solomon Hirsch was born the son of the Jewish trader Samson Hirsch (1780–1844) and his second wife Ela nee. Bear (1795-1845). After the early death of his mother in 1845, the young Solomon came to the Jewish orphanage in Esslingen am Neckar . In 1854 he emigrated to the USA .

In 1864 Solomon Hirsch became co-owner of the wholesale company Fleischner, Meyer & Co. in Portland . He was elected several times to the Oregon Senate, of which he became president in 1880.

From 1889 to 1892 he was the United States Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire .

In 1870 Solomon Hirsch married Josephine b. Mayer, the daughter of Jacob Mayer in Portland. From this marriage comes the daughter Ella.
