Soltan Ali Maschhadi ( listen ? / I PersianAudio file / audio sample سلطان علی مشهدی, IPA : [ soltɑn æli jɛ mæʃhædi ]; * 1435 in Mashhad ; † 1520 ) also known as Nesam ed-Din Soltani ( Persian نظام الدین سلطانی, [ nɛzɑmɛddin ɛ soltɑni ]) was a Persian calligrapher and prominent calligrapher of the Nastaliq script in the 15th and 16th centuries. All the Nastaliq inscriptions on the buildings built by the orders of Soltan Hosseyn Bayqara and Mir ʿAli Shir Nawāʾi in Egypt and the schools in Herat are the works of Soltan Ali Mashhadi. His style of Nastaliq script also interested the court of the Mughal Empire in India .

Life

He was a calligrapher at the court of Abu Said Gurkani and Soltan Hosseyn Bayqaras. He learned calligraphy from Azhar Tabrizi . He was the calligraphy teacher of the important calligraphers such as Soltan Mohammad Nur , Soltan Mohammad Chandan and Mir Ali Heravi .
