The Somali mongoose ( Galerella ochracea ) is a species of carnivore from the mongoose family (Herpestidae). You can find them in the Horn of Africa .

The species is similar to the slender mongoose , which it was previously considered to be a subspecies. Like this one, it is a relatively slim and small representative of the mongoose . The tail length, which is about 25-29 cm in males, reaches a good 85-90% of the head-trunk length . The weight corresponds roughly to that of the slim mongoose. The coloration is quite variable and ranges from dark brown to pale gray. In contrast to the slender mongoose, the tip of the tail is not black. The head is relatively short and wide compared to the slender mongoose.

The Somali mongoose is restricted to the Horn of Africa, where it inhabits arid areas in Somalia and Ethiopia and in the northeasternmost corner of Kenya .

The IUCN classifies the Somali mongoose in the Red List of Threatened Species as Least Concern. It is widespread across the Horn of Africa and is likely to be quite common in places. There are no known serious threats to the continued existence of the species.
