features

Construction of the Imago

The imago of Somatochlora hudsonica measures 50-54 mm, of which 36 to 40 millimeters on the abdomen ( abdominal ) omitted, which is on average within the genus. The slim, slightly hairy abdomen is brass-colored to black and is very similar to that of Somatochlora albicincta . The genital lobe of the males is metallic green and the transitions of the segmentation are yellowish. The abdominal appendages are black. In Somatochlora hudsonica , the upper side of the tenth segment is black.

The part of the chest ( thorax ) to which the wings attach, the so-called pterothorax , is light green in the front area, brownish further back and above. Directly in front of the antelar ridge is a yellow line crossing the pterothorax. The hind wings measure 30 to 34 millimeters. In the otherwise transparent wings, the anal region and the base are whitewashed yellow.

In the face, the forehead ( frons ) and the crown ( vertex ) are black and have a metallic green and blue shine. There are also ocher-colored spots on the fron that extend towards the postclypeus . The back of the head ( occiput ) is covered with soft brown hairs.

Spread and time of flight

The species is common in the far north of the United States and Canada . It flies between June and September.
