features

The slim Imago of Somatochlora tenebrosa measures 48-64 mm, of which 33 to 45 millimeters on the abdomen ( abdominal ) omitted, which is relatively large within the genus. The first segments of the long and slender abdomen are swollen and brown on the sides. On the second segment there are also two light spots on each side. In the case of the males, the back runs down to the genital lobe . On the third segment there are two spots on the sides of the back and one on the stomach side. The rest of the abdomen is black.

The part of the chest ( thorax ) to which the wings attach, the so-called pterothorax, is densely covered with hair both in the front and in the back. It is dark brown in color and shimmers copper. The legs are black. Only the femora are lighter on the outward facing sides. The hind wings measure 39 to 41 millimeters. The wings are transparent and sometimes whitewashed in a light amber color at the base. The wing veins and the wing mark ( pterostigma ) are dark brown.

In the face covered with black hairs, the labrum is bordered orange and black. From that time until the middle of the forehead ( frons ) the face is ocher and then transition to metallic black.

Spread and time of flight

The species is widespread in the eastern United States and Canada . It lives in the forest by flowing water, from small rivulets to rivers, and in wetlands, even if these are sometimes dry due to the season. It flies especially in the twilight between June and October.

The females are similar to those of Somatochlora williamsoni , which is also common in eastern North America.
