Somatochlora walshii is a type of dragonfly from the family of the falcon dragonflies (Corduliidae), which belong to the large dragonflies (Anisoptera).

The light colored Imago of Somatochlora walshii measures 41-52 mm, of which 28 to 40 millimeters on the abdomen ( abdominal ) omitted, which is relatively small within the genus. The abdomen is brown on the first two segments, then blackish. The underside of segments four and nine are slightly yellowish. The triangles on the third segment typical of the genus are elongated. There are also two yellowish spots on the side of the second segment.

The part of the thorax to which the wings attach, the so-called pterothorax, is hairy and bright green. The green becomes lighter towards the sides, but also loses its character. There are also two yellow stripes on the sides. The hind wings measure 25 to 34 millimeters. The wings are transparent and only slightly yellowish at the base. The legs are black except for the underside of the lighter, anterior femora .

In the face, the labrum is black, the anteriorlypeus yellow and the postclypeus olive. There is also a black pattern on the latter. The play of colors continues on the green front , which is adorned with an orange ribbon. The occiput is brown and becomes yellowish towards the rear. Behind the complex eyes , the head is black and covered with yellow-brown hairs.

The species is common in the northern United States and Canada . It flies between June and September.
