Somerton is an administrative division in the county of Norfolk , in the south of the United Kingdom . It consists of the twin villages of East Somerton and West Somerton . At the 2001 census, the place had 257 inhabitants.
The nearest major city is Great Yarmouth, 14 kilometers south . Somerton is characterized by agricultural land and old farms . The village is located in the coastal area and is home to wide dune landscapes and large beach areas.
West Somerton St Mary Church is one of 124 round tower churches in Norfolk. In the cemetery is the grave of Robert Hales, the "Giant of Norfolk", who was born in the village in 1820. With a height of over 2.30 meters and more than 200 kilograms of body weight, he performed in the circus and also met Queen Victoria . He died in 1863.
