biography

Soname was born into an ancient Tibetan aristocratic family in 1973 in the Yarlung Valley in Shannan Governorate . Due to the policy of the Chinese occupying power towards the old ruling elite, she was separated from her parents at the age of six and experienced a childhood in bondage in the Tibetan capital Lhasa. At the age of 16, Soname fled with a group of monks across the Himalayas to Dharamsala , India , the seat of government of the Dalai Lama . Six years later she traveled via France to Great Britain , where she has lived since then and where her career happened by chance in 1998 at a wedding party when she spontaneously sang a wedding song for the bride and groom and was discovered by an ex-member of the Sex Pistols . At the beginning of her career as a musician, she financed her own concerts with the income she earned from her job as a cleaner. A little later she gave a concert in Reykjavík with the Sugarcubes , Björk's ex-band . In 2003 Soname made her concert debut as a soloist at the sold-out Royal Opera House in London . A year later, the devout Buddhist was given the honor of singing for the Dalai Lama at Usher Hall in Edinburgh.

After she had taken her audience by storm with numerous concerts and festival appearances in her adopted country of Great Britain, her bestselling autobiography Wolkenkind was published in Germany in 2005 (circulation 100,000; top 20 of the Spiegel bestseller list ) and made it well known in German-speaking countries . Her CD debut Unforgettable Land was released in 2006, followed by her follow-up album, Plateau , in 2009 . Concert tours have taken her to Australia , Germany , Great Britain, France, Italy , Iceland , Portugal , Switzerland , Spain and Venezuela . She was also a guest at the “Cinema for Peace Gala” in Berlin, where she appeared alongside stars such as Richard Gere , Bob Geldof and Bille August .

Today Soname Yangchen lives as an artist in London . Her third CD Natural Mind , on which all songs are composed by herself and recorded with international musicians, is released by the Munich label ENJA RECORDS.
