The Plontabuora special forest reserve is a nature reserve ( forest reserve ) on the territory of the municipality of Ilanz / Glion in the Surselva in the canton of Graubünden , Switzerland .

location

The Plontabuora special forest reserve covers an area of 33 hectares and is located southwest of the village on the Collina Plontabuora , a hill from Ilanzer Verrucano , in the mountainside that slopes steeply towards the Vorderrhein .

The forest is one of the highest mixed forests of sessile oak and larch in Europe . The larches, which were planted a long time ago by humans, allow enough sunlight to pass through with their fine needles and still act like a parasol in the heat, protecting plants and animals.

biodiversity

The area is characterized by an extraordinarily high biodiversity and is home to more than 500 animal species, some of which have become rare, including stag beetles , hoopoes and green woodpeckers . In addition, the forest provides a habitat for numerous other animals; among them owls , birds of prey , bats , deer and roe deer . Until 1980 the forest was traditionally grazed by sheep , goats and cows . The pastures receded, the forest grew increasingly bushy. In 1996 the farmers started to defend themselves against this. Scottish highland cattle now graze the area. They also eat woody plants and help keep the pastures open.

Development

A marked circular path leads through the reserve. It starts behind the church above the television tower and is easily accessible in about half an hour. At its lowest point, there is a playground and picnic area with a fireplace and tables.

In the uppermost part of the forest are the shell stones of Plontabuora . At the top of the Collina Plontabuora are the ruins of Frauenberg Castle .

In 2010, Ruschein received the Pro Quercus Prize of the association of the same name (German: "for the oak") for his efforts to protect the area, which have continued since 2005.
