The power plant Song Loulou (or Songloulou ) ( French Barrage hydroélectrique de Song Loulou ) is a hydropower plant in the Littoral region , Cameroon , which is located on the Sanaga . It is owned by Eneo also operated and Eneo.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure was built from 1976 to 1981 and consists of three sections. On the right side of the river there is a rock embankment dam with a height of 20 (or 27) m. Its length is 328 (or 300) m and its volume is 240,000 m³. A clay core serves as a seal inside the dam. The rocky subsoil was made water-impermeable by a sealing curtain with a depth of up to 20 m.

A weir system for flood relief with a length of 133 (or 135) m is attached to the dam . The 7 gates of the weir system are each 14 m long. A maximum of 10,000 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood relief. The design flood is 9,830 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 10,000 years.

A dam with a length of 240 (or 225) m and a height of 27 (or 35) m, which extends to the left side of the river, connects to the weir system. The power plant's machine house is located below the dam. The penstocks between the dam and the machine house are 51 m long and 6.40 m in diameter.

On the right side of the river there is a second, smaller dam wall with a length of 200 m and a height of 8 m. Their volume is 12,000 m³. It serves to shut off a smaller branch of the Sanaga.

Reservoir

If the reservoir is completely blocked, it will hold 10 million m³ of water.

power plant

The Song Loulou power plant has a total of 8 Francis turbines and an installed capacity of 396 (or 384 or 388) MW . The 8 turbines of the power plant each produce a maximum of 49.5 (or 48) MW. The head is 41.5 (or 39.2) m, the flow is 130 m³ / s.

The first 4 machines of the power plant went into operation from January to November 1981. The remaining 4 machines were put into operation in 1988 after a second expansion phase, which lasted from 1984 to 1987.

Others

The problem of concrete swelling as a result of an alkali aggregate reaction (e.g. alkali-silica reaction ) occurs with the dam wall . This leads to tension and cracking in the concrete. The work to repair the damage is expected to take 9 years and the total cost of this is estimated at 110 million  .
