Kimch'aek is a North Korean city in Hamgyŏng-pukto province with about 195,000 inhabitants. It was called Sŏngjin ( kor. Kor , 城 津 ) until 1951 and was then renamed during the Korean War after the fallen general of the Korean People's Army, Kim Ch'aek , who had spent his childhood in a village not far from the city. The port of the city on the Sea of Japan is now one of the most important in the country. It is also a heavy industry location .
The place is the seat of the Wolmido Sports Club .
