The Songkhla Lake ( Thai : ทะเลสาบ สงขลา ) is a fish-filled lagoon in southern Thailand near the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand in the provinces of Songkhla and Phatthalung . It forms the largest inland sea in Southeast Asia. Songkhla Lake is up to 20 kilometers wide, has several islands and two bird sanctuaries.
Songkhla Lake consists of four parts. The southern one, called “Thale Sap Songkhla”, opens into the Gulf of Thailand via a 380 meter wide waterway near the city of Songkhla . It contains brackish water with about half the salinity of the ocean. To the north, the water quality changes to fresh water . Further north you can reach the 782.80 square kilometer Thale Luang ("Big Lake") through a 6 km narrow waterway . To the north of the Thale Luang is the 28 square kilometer Thale Noi ("small lake") in a mangrove swamp. The 75 kilometers long spit that separates the lake from the ocean is remarkable . This spit, however, was created by silt that connected the islands originally located here.
Ramsar wetland
The "Phru Khuan Khi Sian" wetlands on Lake Thale Noi have been protected by the Ramsar Convention since 1998. They are part of the larger “Thale Noi Non-Hunting Area” established in 1975.
Kuan Ki Sian is one of the few intact freshwater - wetlands - ecosystems in Thailand. There are lakes , marshes , Melaleuca , swamps , forests , rice fields and swampy grasslands .
A small population of the Irrawaddy Dolphin lives in the lake, but its population is endangered by overfishing and environmental pollution.
