The sun sanctuary of Menkauhor is a previously undiscovered ancient Egyptian temple structure from the time of the 5th dynasty , which was built under the king ( Pharaoh ) Menkauhor , who lived around 2420 to 2410 BC. Ruled.

Written mentions

Only five priests have been attested for the Menkauhor sanctuary so far and it does not seem to have been in operation long after the death of its builder. Although one of the traditional priests named Sabu lived during the reign of Teti II , the first king of the 6th dynasty , he was also a priest in the solar sanctuaries of Userkaf and Niuserre , whose operation was already under the last king of the 5th dynasty, Unas , was discontinued. It can therefore be assumed that all of his priesthood titles were merely fictitious.

In addition to the titles of priests, the sun sanctuary of Menkauhor is attested to on a seal unrolling that was found in a princess grave near the Niuserre pyramid . On the one hand, this is evidence that the Menkauhor sanctuary also paid fees for the cult of the dead of Niuserre and, on the other hand, that the royal family was also included in these funeral foundations.

More detailed information on the reconstruction or localization of the solar sanctuary cannot be found in the existing sources.
