Sonya Levien

Sonya Levien , born Sara Opeskin (* December 13 jul. / 25. December  1895 greg. In Moscow ; † 19th March 1960 in Los Angeles ) was an American screenwriter Russian origin.

Life

Born Sara Opeskin , she came to the United States as a toddler. There her parents took the surname Levien and renamed her Sonya . She studied law and worked as a lawyer. In 1917 she married Carl Hovey. But she soon turned to journalism and also wrote plays. From the 1920s she was also hired as a screenwriter. Films of very different genres were made. She was best known as a co-author of the classics "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "Quo vadis?". She received the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in 1956 for "Interrupted Melody".
