Die neue Heimat is an American drama from 1928. The screenplay of the silent film is based on a story by Julien Josephson .
action
The Slovak Pleznik family immigrates to the USA. Father Peter meets a compatriot, Sokol, in a restaurant, who tries to talk him out of his plan to become an American citizen. Nevertheless, Peter applies for citizenship for himself and his family.
Five years later, with the help of Judge Gresham, Peter gets his long-awaited papers. Shortly afterwards, his son Eric reports to the army and is recalled to the war in Europe. When Judge Gresham sentenced one of the people who did not want to be naturalized to ten years in prison for treason, Sokol was appointed by his comrades to kill the judge. Sokol places a time bomb in a cake that Peter's wife baked for the judge. Peter brings the cake with the bomb to Gresham. The judge was seriously injured and his secretary killed in the explosion. Suspicion falls on Peter, who is arrested.
Sokol is fatally injured in a traffic accident. Before he dies, he confesses to the bomb attack. Peter is released from prison. Even when news of Eric's death arrives on the battlefield, Peter's patriotism is not shaken. He returns to his work feeling that he has done everything he could for his new country.
criticism
Mordaunt Hall of the New York Times wrote that the film was another example of those oddly mechanical scenarios that someone very enthusiastically smoothed out for such actors to take part.
