Sooke [ suːk ] is a small Canadian town about 20 km away from Victoria , the capital of British Columbia , on Vancouver Island . It is located on the Sooke Basin , a bay that is only connected to Juan de Fuca Street by a narrow opening. It is part of the Greater Victoria metropolitan area , in the Capital Regional District and Highway 14 runs through it. East-Sooke, about 10 minutes from Sooke, is a purely residential area in the middle of a dense wooded area.

history

The name of the settlement goes back to the anglicized form of the tribal name of the resident T'sou-ke . The first traces of European settlement go back to the end of the 19th century. In the official documents of the province (here in the BC Gazetteer ) the settlement is first mentioned as a settlement in the 1909 edition and recorded in the maps from 1913. In 1934 the first post office opened in the community.

The granting of local self-government for the municipality took place on September 2, 1999 ( incorporated as District Municipality ).
