Madeleine-Sophie Arnould , also Magdeleine Arnould (born February 14, 1744 in Paris , † October 22, 1802 ) was a French opera singer (soprano) and Salonnière of the Enlightenment .

Life

Sophie Arnould received a good education and came to the French court as an " apprentice " in the royal chapel. From there she was brought to the Paris Opera in 1757 , where she was the darling of the public until 1778. Arnould shone as much with her pure, lively and expressive singing as she did with her beautiful playing.

Their audience, especially their admirers, compared Arnould to Ninon de Lenclos . In her salon she received famous enlighteners of her time such as d'Alembert , Diderot , Mably , Duclos , JJ Rousseau and Benjamin Franklin .

Pierre-Joseph Bernard , Jean Dorat , Charles-Simon Favart and Antoine François Marmontel sang about them. Her sometimes very biting joke became proverbial, so that Albéric Deville collected her bonmots under the title "Arnoldiana" and published it after her death (1813).

Through the mediation of Police Minister Joseph Fouché , the state granted her a pension and free apartment in the Hotel d´Angevillers , where she was also the center of a circle of poets, artists and philosophers.

Sophie Arnould was the mistress of Louis-Léon de Brancas , Duc de Lauragais. Their son Antoine Constant was born on October 16, 1784 and recognized by his father on July 12, 1786.
