Gabriel Bonnot de Mably

Gabriel Bonnot de Mably (March 14, 1709 in Grenoble , † April 2, 1785 in Paris ) was a French politician and philosopher during the Enlightenment .

Life

Étienne Bonnot de Condillac was a brother of Gabriel Bonnot de Mably. Her parents were Gabriel Bonnot de Mably (1666-1727) and a Madame de la Coste (* 1675). Gabriel Bonnot de Mably trained with the Jesuits in Lyon , became canon of the Church of Isle Barbe and secretary to his uncle, the cardinal and minister Tencin , who repeatedly employed him on diplomatic missions.

In 1740 his brother, Jean Bonnot de Mably (1696–1761), hired Jean-Jacques Rousseau as a tutor for his children.

From 1746, however, he devoted most of his time in Paris to historical studies. The writings of this enlightener are characterized by the striving to build politics on a moral basis and to restore the state to the simple, original state of civil society as in the time of Lycurgus of Athens in the late period of Attic democracy , while he restored the conditions of the Ancien Régime of its time strongly condemned. He died in Paris on April 23, 1785.
