Sophie, Duchess of Mecklenburg , also Sophia (* December 18, 1481 , † July 12, 1503 in Torgau ) was Duchess of Mecklenburg and by marriage Duchess of Saxony.

Life

Sophie was the third of seven children and the second daughter of Duke Magnus II and his wife Sophie of Pomerania . On March 1, 1500, she married Duke Johann the Steadfast of Saxony.

From this marriage there was a son:

Sophie died shortly after the birth of her son. She was buried in the Torgau Marienkirche . Your bronze tombstone was made in the Nuremberg workshop of Peter Vischer the Elder based on a design by Jacopo de 'Barbari .

Torgau Altar

In their memory , Johann and his brother Friedrich the Wise donated an altar dedicated to Saint Anne and the Fourteen Helpers in Need, which was inaugurated on July 19, 1505. They commissioned the altar painting from Lucas Cranach the Elder . Since the beginning of the 20th century, a triptych in the Frankfurt Städel showing the Holy Family has been regarded as this Torgau altar . A Cranach plaque with the compact representation of the 14 helpers in need remained in Torgau and is now placed behind the grave.
