Soraya Sherif (born July 3, 1934 in Egypt ) is an Egyptian mathematician and university professor. She was appointed as the youngest professor for pure mathematics at the Ain Shams University in Cairo .

life and work

Sherif came from a family of four girls and four boys. After completing her secondary education, she studied mathematics from 1952 to 1956 at the Women's College of Ain-Shams University . She then taught as a teacher at the Moharram Bey School in Alexandria . With a scholarship to study at an English university, she went to the University of Nottingham in 1958 . Here she received her Master of Science degree in mathematics in 1960. In 1963 she did her PhD at the University of Birmingham with Brian Kuttner and returned to the United Arab Republic . She has participated in various international conferences in the UK and Europe . The first conference she attended, the British Mathematical Colloquium, was held in Cardiff in 1959 . In 1962 she was delegated by the UAR embassy to international conferences in London and Stockholm . When she was just over 26, she was appointed professor of pure mathematics as the youngest professor at Ain Shams University in Cairo . She discovered new solutions for the Tauber theorems and is known for this area as Harry Pitt and Alfred Tauber .
