Sound and Fury is an American documentary by Josh Aronson about two families whose children suffer from hearing loss : A cochlear implant would enable the children to hear , but would deprive them of their established role in the deaf culture . The film, made in 2000, was named Best Documentary a . a. nominated for the 2001 Academy Awards.

The plot represents the developments of the family members and discusses their morality . The documentary accompanies two families: In the family of Peter Artinian, his wife Nita and his three deaf children, the daughter Heather opts for a cochlear implant, which Peter refuses. Nita first endorsed the procedure, but later changed her mind: “We're afraid that the cochlear implant will change her identity” ( We fear that the cochlear implant will change her identity ). In the family of Chris Artinian, Peter's brother, and wife, both hearing, it is found that the newborn son is living without hearing and the parents advocate the use of an implant.
Ultimately, Peter Artinian's family decides against implants, Chris's family in favor.
Sound and Fury: 6 Years Later
In the sequel, 6 years later , Heather is shown who, together with her siblings and her mother, now has an implant. She has people who can hear as well as deaf people in her circle of friends.
