The Sound of Scarp ( Gaelic : Caolas an Scarp ) is a strait in Scotland . It is part of the Outer Hebrides and separates the islands of Harris and Scarp .

geography

The roughly 3.7 kilometers long strait initially runs from north to south and bends to the southwest near the hamlet of Hushinish . At its narrowest point, it is around 400 meters wide. In the middle of the northern entrance to the Sound of Scarp is the small island of Fladday , which also marks the end of the inlet Loch Resort , which forms the border between Lewis and Harris, the two parts of the double island of Lewis and Harris .

colonization

Lewis and Harris itself is sparsely populated. Only the hamlet of Hushinish lies along the sound. Scarp Island has been uninhabited since 1971. However, there was once a settlement on the sound that can probably be traced back to the time of the Viking colonization of the Outer Hebrides. There is also the jetty, which was once of great economic and infrastructural importance for Scarp. Harris' side pier is at Hushinish.
