Sourahata B. Semega-Janneh

Sourahata Baboucarr Semega-Janneh (born November 6, 1942 in Bathurst ) is a Gambian lawyer , he is described more than forty years of professional experience as a successful and experienced litigator.

Life

He attended Methodist Boys High School and, after graduating from high school in 1961, went to Great Britain to study law. Semega-Janneh received a degree in Law ( LL. B. ) of the University of Hull (England). He was inducted into the Honorable Society of Gray's Inn in London as a barrister . He was appointed to the English and Gambian Bar Association in 1970 , he is the doyen of the Gambian Bar Association.

Semega-Janneh's career began while working as a senior executive in the London Estate Tax Office. In the early 1970s he was the first master and registrar at the Supreme Court in Gambia. In 1973 he founded the law firm Semega Chambers and voluntarily left the civil service. From 1993 to 1998 he was President of the Gambia Bar Association , the Gambian Bar Association . Semega-Janneh took part in two election observer missions as part of a Commonwealth team, one observing the parliamentary elections in Namibia in 1989 and then the elections in Malaysia in 1991 . In 2017, Semega-Janneh was appointed chairman of the commission of inquiry into the financial affairs of former President Yahya Jammeh and his staff, the so-called Janneh Commission . The committee existed from July 2017 to 2019.

Memberships

Sourahata B. Semega-Janneh was a founding member of the Law Reform Commission of The Gambia , the Medical and Dental Council of The Gambia, and the Gambia General Legal Council . He was also a founding member of the African Commission on Human and Peoples ' Rights in the 1980s , where he worked for eight years. He served for many years as a member of the control committee of the Supreme Court ( Supreme Court ) and the Court of Appeal ( Court of Appeal ) and was also a member of the Gambian Chapter of the African Society of International and Comparative Law ( African Society of International and Comparative Law ), the published a journal with legal articles. He has also been chairman of the Kombo Beach Hotel for more than 20 years and was a board member of other companies.
