The South African army ( Engl. : South African Army , abbreviated SAA ) is the army of the armed forces . The South African Army has a staff of 40,121 men, making it the largest branch of the South African armed forces. In 2014, the SAA was heavily refitted, with armored personnel carriers and artillery being replaced in particular . The SAMIL military trucks are also of great importance . The South African Army particularly relies on equipment from local, technologically high-quality denel production.
