Iziko South African Museum

The Iziko South African Museum is a museum of natural history ( zoology , paleontology ), archeology and anthropology in Cape Town , South Africa .

It was founded in 1825 ( Andrew Smith was the first director ) and has been in its current location at Company Gardens in Cape Town since 1897.

The collection currently (2020) includes over 1.5 million objects.

Its artifacts include whale skeletons, Therapsid from the Karoosedimenten , giant squid , coelacanth , a quagga , sharks, iron meteorites, minerals and birds. It has a planetarium .
