The South Ford is a strait that separates the Scottish Hebridean islands of Benbecula in the north from the neighboring island of South Uist in the south . The waterway runs in an east-west direction and is about three kilometers wide at its widest point at the western end. At the narrowest point it measures only about 800 m. This is where the A865 crosses the canal on the South Ford Causeway and connects the neighboring islands. To the west, the narrow island of Gualan marks the end of the South Ford.

There are numerous small islands within the South Ford. In many places it has only a shallow water depth. At low tide, the strait falls partially dry and can be crossed on foot within a short period of time. To counter the dangers of the incoming tide and the quicksands, the South Ford Bridge was built in 1942 . In 1982 it was replaced by the South Ford Causeway dam .
