The A865 is a road on the Scottish Islands Outer Hebrides , precisely the archipelago Uist . It begins in the north on North Uist at the Lochmaddy ferry terminal and runs for around 95 km along the North Uist coast via Grimsay and Benbecula to Lochboisdale on South Uist . It is the only connecting road between the islands and the main road between the islands. It is also a feeder to the Berneray Causeway , which leads to the island of Berneray north of North Uist , from where there is also a ferry connection to Harris . With Lochmaddy and Lochboisdale, the main towns of North and South Uist are on the A865. It also leads past the Our Lady of the Isles statue , an important sculpture from the 1950s.

Starting in Lochmaddy to the west of North Uist, the A865 runs counterclockwise along the coastline. Near Carinish it bends east and crosses the North Ford via the North Ford Causeway , where it first reaches the west coast of the island of Grimsay and then leads in a south-westerly direction to Benbecula. At the level of Benbecula Airport , it turns south, crosses Benbecula and leads over the South Ford Causeway to South Uist. Continuing south, it bends to the east after about 27 km and ends at the Lochmaddy ferry pier. The road is only partially expanded to two lanes, otherwise as a single track road . With this single-lane route, there are passing points at regular intervals in order to be able to pass oncoming traffic.

During the Second World War , the expansion of the road and the construction of the dams between the islands were pushed ahead, as the Benbecula Airport, which had been converted into a military airfield, was to be connected to the ferry in Lochmaddy. The approximately 600 m long South Ford Causeway was inaugurated in 1982 and replaced the South Ford Bridge , which was completed in 1942 . The North Ford Causeway was completed in 1960 and opened in the presence of the British Queen Mother . In 1977 the road surface was renewed.
