The Southard Promontory is a 10 km long and 3 km wide peninsula on the Foyn coast of West Antarctic Graham Land . It is located in the northwest section of Mill Inlet between the Breitfuß Glacier and the Alberts Glacier . It is bordered by steep cliffs that rise up to 1500 m and merge into a snow-covered plateau.
Aerial photographs of the area were taken during the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1946–1947). At the same time, the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey carried out a survey . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named them in 1980 after Rupert Barron Southard Jr. (1923–1999), who was, among other things, head of the cartography department of the United States Geological Survey from 1979 to 1986.
