The Southern Cross subglacial highlands comprise a group of high plateaus that are completely covered by continental glacial ice . In Wilkesland these plateaus are located east of the Webb subglacial rift at the northern end of the Wilkes subglacial basin .
Its extent was determined by sonar tracking as part of a joint program of the Scott Polar Research Institute , the National Science Foundation and Denmark's Technical University between 1967 and 1979. It is named after the Southern Cross , the ship of the Norwegian polar explorer Carsten Egeberg Borchgrevink during the Southern Cross Expedition (1898–1900).
