The Webb subglacial ditch is a depression in the East Antarctic Georg V country that is completely covered by glacial ice . The trench lies west of the Southern Cross subglacial highlands in the northwestern part of the Wilkes subglacial basin .
Its extent was determined by sonar tracking as part of a joint program of the Scott Polar Research Institute , the National Science Foundation and Denmark's Technical University between 1967 and 1979. It is named after Eric Norman Webb (1889–1984), geomagnetist for the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911–1914) of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson .
