The Southwest Gander River is an approximately 70 km long river on the island of Newfoundland, which belongs to the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .

River course

The Southwest Gander River forms the outflow of the 215  m high Lake Little Gander Pond in the eastern center of the island. The Southwest Gander River initially flows north for 20 km and then turns north-northeast. At river kilometer 55, a major tributary that drains Southwest Pond meets the Southwest Gander River from the right. At river kilometer 19 the Dead Wolf Brook flows into the river from the right. 10 km to the west, the Northwest Gander River runs roughly parallel. Both rivers flow into the southwestern shore of Gander Lake and form the main source rivers of the Gander River , which drains the lake to the north.

Hydrology

The Southwest Gander River drains an estimated 960 km². The mean discharge at the gauge at river kilometer 32 is 14.2 m³ / s. The highest monthly discharges usually occur in April with an average of 45.1 m³ / s.
