history

After the end of the Second World War , the Soviet soldiers who died in Lübben were buried in graves of honor on Paul-Gerhardt-Strasse and Luckauer Strasse. The expansion of the highway , however, F 87 craftsmen had embarrassed the graves at the Luckauer road. A merger with the graves on Paul-Gerhardt-Straße was not possible. On the one hand, there was no space for an extension due to the adjacent residential development, on the other hand, the obelisks of both cemeteries were damaged by the weather. The city therefore decided in 1975 to build a new cemetery of honor near the grove. On June 2, 1976, a total of 12 experts began exhuming the remains. They handed over any ammunition they found to the People's Police . Further exhumations took place from June 8 to 12, 1976 in Paul-Gerhardt-Strasse.

Burschik Monument

The new cemetery of honor with 208 graves was built according to plans by the architect Konrad Heidenreich. He designed an area of around 3,000 m². The central element is a memorial stone and memorial by the sculptor Herbert Burschik from Eisenhüttenstadt . The monument stands on a wide flight of steps and consists of two unevenly high and closely juxtaposed concrete steles . They are connected to each other in the lower third by a crossbar. A soldier's head is attached to the center of the front; the red star on the left and battle scenes on the right. The monument was inaugurated on October 7, 1976.

In 2001 the city had a new fence built. In 2006 the green area was redesigned. Gardeners laid a new turf for around 30,000 euros, laid beds for bushes and perennials and re-bordered the path. In 2012, the city redeveloped the monument for around 10,000 euros and was able to fall back on 55% funding from the state.
