A social forum is an open meeting of globalization critics and opponents of " social cuts ". Local social forums have been created along the lines of the continental social forums and the world social forum. They work on the basis of the Charter of Principles of the World Social Forum.

Attendees

Organizations and individuals of very different origins meet at social forums: critics of globalization, left-wing organizations, critical Christians , anthroposophists , growth critics and other supporters of alternative worldviews and ways of life. Party functionaries are generally less welcome, as one does not want to be subordinate to party political interests. The social forums are strictly separated from right-wing extremists. The local social forums often work closely with an Attac regional group.

In Germany, meetings took place at the federal level since June 1, 2002 , at which members of various regional and local social forums in Germany and individuals met. They mainly served to network the regional and local social forums within Germany and to prepare and follow up on the European social forums. The "Initiative for a Social Forum in Germany" (SFiD-Initiative) emerged from the participants in these meetings, and its coordination group prepared and followed up the German plenary meetings. Willi van Ooyen was considered the legal head of the West German social forum movement .

  • The First German Social Forum from July 21 to 24, 2005 in Erfurt called for the Hartz IV reforms to be withdrawn and for “basic social security” to be introduced for all people. It turned against the further use of nuclear energy and criticized foreign deployments of the Bundeswehr .
  • The second German Social Forum took place from October 18 to 21, 2007 in Cottbus .
  • The Third German Social Forum took place from October 15-18 , 2009 in Hitzacker (Wendland).

A fourth social forum in Germany in 2011 in Freiburg im Breisgau was still planned at least in 2009, but no longer took place.
