Glaxo Wellcome

Glaxo Wellcome was a company that was formed when Glaxo acquired Burroughs Wellcome & Company in March 1995. In 2000 Glaxo Wellcome was merged into GlaxoSmithKline .

Glaxo Wellcome was considered one of the 10 largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. Seven of its products were in the top 50 best-selling drugs .

In the UK , the company had research facilities in Ware and Stevenage in Hertfordshire , Greenford in London and Dartford and Beckenham in Kent . It also had research centers in North Carolina ( USA ) and Japan , and further locations in the USA, Europe and the Middle East were planned.

There were factories in Ulverston in Cumbria , Barnard Castle in County Durham , Speke on Merseyside and Montrose in northeast Scotland .

The size of the company is largely due to Sir Richard Sykes , a scientist who led most of Glaxo 's projects .
