Social Liberal University Association

The Sozialliberale Hochschulverband (SLH), founded in April 1968 under the name Deutsche Studenten Union (DSU), was a nationwide university policy association in the former Federal Republic. In 1972 it was renamed the German Student Union / Sozialliberaler Hochschulverband and in 1973 it was renamed the Sozialliberaler Hochschulverband .

history

The DSU emerged in response to the student movement and, when it was founded, saw itself as a decidedly non-partisan gathering movement for all independent and moderate forces in student self-government. According to her own statement, she wanted “to summarize all those students who at the time were given the predicate 'moderate' and 'liberal'” and at the same time “ to take up and continue the university reform that the SDS had thrown overboard”.

The initial name student union did not imply any closeness to the union parties ( CDU and CSU with their student association RCDS ), but was originally based on the idea of an independent student union, which had been discussed since the mid-1960s . The university groups formed as a result usually named themselves after the respective university location , ie "Kölner Studenten Union", "Münchner Studenten Union" etc. The first DSU federal chairman was the Cologne AStA chairman at the time, Klaus Laepple .

In the spectrum of university politics at the time, the DSU groups comprised (left-) liberal, social democratic and moderately conservative positions. The DSU developed a basic concept of "social liberal politics" and accordingly renamed itself in 1972/1973 the Social Liberal University Association (SLH). The individual member groups also gradually took over the name SLH. In contrast to the Liberal University Association (LHV), the SLH categorically rejected left-wing coalitions including communist groups and instead preferred to form a coalition with the RCDS.

In 1980 the SLH had around 2,000 members in 40 university groups. At that time he was already considered to be more closely related to the FDP and was finally merged in 1987 in the newly founded Federal Association of Liberal University Groups (LHG). Former members of the SLH are - like members of other liberal student associations - organized in the Association of Liberal Academics .
