Sociological Society in Vienna

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sociological Society in Vienna was founded in 1907 on the initiative of Rudolf Goldscheid and existed until 1934. The aim of the association was to establish sociology as an academic subject and to make it part of political education in schools. In addition to Goldscheid, founding members were Max Adler , Carl Grünberg , Wilhelm Jerusalem , Karl Renner , Ludo Moritz Hartmann , Lujo Brentano and Josef Redlich . Later Hans Kelsen , Ferdinand Tönnies and Alfred Vierkandt also joined the company.

The society developed verifiable activities until 1927. 160 lecture evenings were held at which, in addition to the members of the society, important representatives of the early social sciences had their say, such as Georg Simmel , Eduard Bernstein and Joseph Schumpeter . The society was only able to publish its own series of publications for two years (1926/27); a total of eight issues appeared. The establishment of the company is considered to be the “initial spark”, even if the professionalization of sociology in Austria only succeeded after the Second World War .
