The Spielvereinigung 1910 Merzig eV is a German football club based in the Saarland district town of Merzig in the Merzig-Wadern district .

history

Established until the post-war period

The club was founded in 1910 as the Merzig football club . For the 1921/22 season , the first team rose once to Division II of the Saar district league within the South German soccer championship. With 7:21 points, however, at the end of the season they went straight back down to seventh place. Sometime afterwards, or at the latest after the end of World War II , the club merged with another football club to form today's game association. After resumption of play in Saarland, the club was classified in the West Group of the third-class probation class Saar for the 1946/47 season . With 6:28 points, the club was able to keep the class here. The league then became the honor division for the next season and the game association reached in their group with 27: 9 points this time the promotion to the second-class honor league . The 1948/49 season was not going to be very successful and with 12:40 points it was the last in the table to go straight back to the third division.

Promotion to the amateur league

For the 1973/74 season the club rose again to the Saarland amateur league and was able to easily hold the class with 28:32 points over eighth place. After a tenth place in the following season , it should not be enough at the end of the 1975/76 season and the team had to start relegation to the district league with 23:45 points over 17th place.

Current time

In the 2003/04 season, the club played in the district league A Hochwald and finished the season with 67 points over third place. For the 2010/11 season, the club joined forces with FC Besseringen to form a syndicate . In this constellation, the team immediately finished second with 73 points, which entitled them to participate in a playoff against SV Gersweiler . This game could then be won 2: 5 in Gersweiler , but in the end both clubs rose to the Merzig-Wadern district league .

For the 2012/13 season, however, the SG was dissolved again and the team was relegated to the district league A , but then with 80 points immediately won the championship and the return to the district league. After the 2014/15 season, the championship was won again with 77 points, which should mean promotion to the Saarland regional league. This class could then be held until the 2016/17 season. In the last season, the game association suffered from a severe shortage of players, which meant that the second and third teams had to be canceled. Previously, the previous sponsor stopped his payments, with which the almost entire first team should leave the club. In the season all 30 games in the national league were finally lost, in the end a goal difference of 9: 249 was on the final table.

In the district league, the young team should face a similar fate. This time it was possible to score at least five points at the end of the season. The goal difference turned out to be more frugal with 45: 196. In the end, however, of course, as the knocked-down bottom of the table, relegation to the district league A was due. The 2018/19 season was the first in the lowest class of the region after a long time. Again, the team finished last in the table, this time with three points and a goal difference of 23: 204, an even worse result than in the previous season. However, since this represented the lowest division, no further relegation followed. So the team still plays in this division to this day.
