Space Quest is a series of six graphic adventures that were published between 1986 and 1995 by the former computer game manufacturer Sierra On-Line . Sierra also produced all parts except for Space Quest V, which was developed by the subsidiary Dynamix . The plot, designed as a parody of science fiction topics such as Star Wars and Star Trek in particular , comes in the first four parts from the developers Scott Murphy and Mark Crowe , who also refer to themselves as Two Guys from Andromeda . For the fifth part, Crowe, who had meanwhile switched to Dynamix, was solely responsible. On the sixth part, Scott Murphy worked again with Josh Mandel .

The main character of the plot is the space caretaker Roger Wilco, who in a humorous mixture of ignorance, clumsiness and chance becomes the savior of the world again and again, whereby with the exception of the player nobody recognizes the connections, which is why he for his violations committed during the rescue Subordinate or completely nonsensical regulations are often called to account instead of being celebrated as a hero.

description

The first title appeared in October 1986. This first work as well as the second part used the then new EGA graphics (16 colors) in the PC version , the Amiga version had 32 colors. The character could be given commands via a text parser , and it was moved across the screen with the arrow keys.

The game quickly gained cult status thanks to its humor, so that several sequels appeared in the following years. There are six official Space Quest games to date . The first part of the series was re-released in 1991 with VGA graphics, sound card support and point-and-click control instead of the old text parser. With the Space Quest Collection published in 2006 , the games were offered for the first time in a version compatible with the Microsoft Windows XP operating system , and they are now available as Space Quest 1 + 2 + 3 and Space Quest 4 + 5 + 6 via the GOG.com platform .

The games (original title)

The first part appeared for the first time in 1986. When Space Quest II appeared in 1987 , the first part was again comprehensively revised and appeared as version 2.0. For the tenth anniversary of the manufacturer Sierra On-Line, a completely new version of the first part with VGA graphics and 256 colors was released in 1991.

When rumors about a seventh part were circulating, the fans' hope was dashed again after it was officially announced that a project that had been started had failed. Fans of the Space Quest series also published various fan adventures .

SpaceVenture

In April 2012, Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy announced that they had teamed up again to develop a new adventure game and formed a development company called Guys From Andromeda. Gary Owens was also there, the narrator from Space Quest IV and 6. A crowdfunding campaign on the Kickstarter platform was supposed to raise $ 500,000 for the production of a new game called SpaceVenture ; about $ 540,000 could actually be collected.

However, the release date originally announced for February 2013 could not be met. In the meantime, Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy apologized several times for inexperience for underestimating the difficulties that could be expected in a development project. In February 2015, Gary Owens died, who had already taken over the English voice of the narrator in Space Quest IV and 6 and was part of the team for the SpaceVenture project. Most recently, the project stalled due to a very serious illness of their respective parents. No release date has been set in April 2018.
