Research and Development
According to the 2016 company report, SpaceNet AG conducts research in the areas of digital market trends and product innovations. One of the research focuses in 2016 was on further increasing the user-friendliness of the product and service range. One of the measures is to increase flexibility in the provision of virtualized resources (cloud pool). This should enable customers to independently provision virtual machines on the basis of a resource quota. At the end of 2016, a new entry-level product was developed in the area of dedicated servers. A high level of standardization resulted in a significant cost reduction.
In addition to internal research and development work, SpaceNet AG also cooperates with research institutions, clusters and companies and participates in scientific IT projects. As part of the INTERREG VA program Austria-Bavaria 2014-2020 , SpaceNet AG acted as a technical service provider within the project "Sustainable residential locations". The aim of the project is to develop an IT-supported decision-making aid for the sustainable choice of residential location.
For its research activities, SpaceNet AG received the Stifterpreis 2016/17 from the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft eV with the seal of "Innovative through Research".
The total expenditure for research and development in the 2016 financial year was around EUR 500,000, which corresponds to 3% of sales.

- 2017: On June 22nd, the Münster Higher Administrative Court ruled that the law on data retention violates EU law. SpaceNet AG is initially the only German provider to be exempted from the storage obligation. Six days later, the Federal Network Agency temporarily suspended the obligation to store data under the law that came into force on July 1, 2017, until a complaint in the main proceedings was decided.
- 2018:: On April 20, 2018, the Cologne Administrative Court (in parallel proceedings by Telekom) ruled that the unprovoked data retention is not compatible with EU law. The Federal Republic, represented by the Federal Network Agency, had appealed against the decision of the Cologne Administrative Court. SpaceNet has approved the leap revision to the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig.
- 2019: On September 25, 2019, the Leipzig Federal Administrative Court suspended the data retention procedure of SpaceNet and submitted a question to the European Court of Justice on the interpretation of the data protection directive for electronic communications (Directive 2002/58 / EC). The European judges now have to decide whether the German regulation, which provides for a compulsory and comprehensive storage of traffic and location data for all users, is compatible with the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. Only then will there be legal certainty for the Internet and telecommunications industry. Until final clarification, the obligation to retain data remains suspended.
