Karl Strack (born February 17, 1722 in Mainz , † October 10, 1805 in Aschaffenburg ) was a German doctor.

Live and act

Karl Strack studied medicine in Mainz, Paris , Berlin and Erfurt . He received his doctorate in Erfurt in 1747. In Mainz he was appointed professor of surgery in 1754, physiology and pathology in 1763 and chemistry in 1782 . In 1784 during the restoration of the University of Mainz , he was given the title of "electoral court and government councilor". In June 1794 he moved to Aschaffenburg with the Elector of Mainz, Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal and some of his professorial colleagues .

Strack's work on treating cradle cap with powder from wild pansy herb attracted particular attention . Without naming his sources, he resorted to experience reports from the late Middle Ages and early modern times. His Viennese colleague Anton von Störck proceeded in a similar way in his investigations into the pharmacology of the autumn crocus and the blue monkshood. The Americans John Stearns and Oliver Prescott also used this method at the beginning of the 19th century when, in their investigations of ancient folk remedies, they described the labor-enhancing effect of ergot , which was already known in the late Middle Ages and early modern times .
