A gap vortex , ( English vertebrae cleft; vertebral cleft , ancient Greek Spondyloschisis ) is a congenital malformation of the spine . In contrast to the arching anomalies , it is a disruption of the development of the vertebral bodies .

The term vertebral gap is to be distinguished as a term for spina bifida .

Development and designations

A vertebral body develops from three primary ossification centers . At the time of birth, there is usually a central core of bone and one each in the right and left halves of the arch. These nuclei are connected by cartilage; the x-ray shows the arch closure at the end of the 2nd year of life and the closure between body and arch between the 3rd and 6th year of life.

If the right and left halves of the vertebra are not connected, a gap in the sagittal plane , one speaks of a butterfly vertebra .

Gaps in the frontal plane occur less often , then it is a "frontal vertebral column" ( English Coronal clefts ).

Occurrence

Depending on the progress of the ossification, newborns and premature babies can be normal or a normal variant as the remainder of the notochord .

However, cleft vertebrae can also occur in a number of diseases:
