use

Today the Spanish lagoon is known for its diverse uses in the maritime sector. It is used for fishing, is the starting point for kayak tours, and there are boat moorings. It is particularly characterized by the variety of birds that have their nesting sites there. The Spanish Lagoon is also a bird sanctuary under the Ramsar Convention in Aruba. The inland part of the lagoon is densely wooded with mangroves on the right and left . Reptiles and mammals live in the mangrove forest. Many water birds take advantage of the rich food supply and nest in the treetops.

At the entrance to the lagoon is the Pos Chikito fishing port and there is also a fish market in the port that offers fresh fish for sale every day. Opposite the lagoon is Palm Island . The ferry to the island has its home port in the Spanish Lagoon.
