The Spargelminierfliege ( Ophiomyia simplex , syn. Hexomyza simplex ) is a fly from the family of leaf miners (Agromyzidae).

features

The black, hump-shaped flies reach a length of 2.5-3.5 mm. The larvae are white and about 4 mm long.

distribution

The species occurs in Germany, Great Britain , Denmark, Poland, France, Italy and Hungary. The species is found in the vicinity of asparagus growing areas.

Way of life

The flies are bivoltine , which means that they form two generations per year. The species usually overwinters as a pupa . The first adult flies appear from mid-May. Eggs are laid on the surface of the asparagus plant ( Asparagus officinalis ), slightly above the ground. The hatched larvae mine in the stem of the plant. The mine leads up about 30 cm and then turns back down. Pupation takes place inside the mine. Usually there are several mines on the same plant. This can cause significant damage to the plant and lead to its death. The adult flies have a life expectancy of a few days.
