The Sparkasse Herford was created in 1996 through the merger of the Kreissparkasse Herford with the Stadtsparkasse Herford. The Kreissparkasse Herford was founded in 1846. The district of Herford and the city of Bünde founded a savings bank association in 1972, which the cities of Löhne and Vlotho joined in 1983 and the city of Herford in 1996.
