history

Freiberg is the most traditional Sparkasse location in what is now the Sparkasse Mittelachsen area and one of the oldest in Saxony. The Sparkasse in Freiberg was opened in July 1823 in the "locale belonging to the freyen work establishment in the local orphanage by the association of the local savings bank established on the initiative of the governor Freiherr von Friesen". Among other things, he was responsible for finances in the communities. He must have been enthusiastic about a letter from the Saxon court (King Friedrich August I) dated March 30, 1822, which had taken up the Sparkasse idea after the Sparkasse was founded in Dresden in February 1821 and called for further savings banks to be set up. With 24 citizens of Freiberg, he founded an association which became the sponsor of the Sparkasse. July 28, 1823 was the first opening day. In 1833, the Sparkasse was passed into municipal sponsorship. The Sparkasse on Freiberger Poststrasse is now the main branch of Sparkasse Mittelachsen.

In 2020 there were 27 branches. A mobile branch offers services in rural areas.
